Fiction Best Sellers - Can You Reach The Best Selling List?

Anybody who can thread together a nice sentence can compose a best merchandising novel. It's as simple as that. There are three grounds why more than of us don't make it.

The first is that it necessitates perseverance. It's becoming something of a platitude to state that the secret of successful authorship is simply to use rotter to place and write, but it's absolutely true. The possible best selling writer can't afford to wait for the Muse to see before putting pen to paper, and it's no good offering up alibis about how demanding household life is, or how tired we are at the end of the day, we just have got to sit down down and write. Ill or well, hungover or buzzing, tired or alert, we've got to acquire those words down.

A novel is by definition a book made up of tons of words, each of them necessitates to be written down, missive by letter. Many of these one thousands of words then have got to be erased and replaced in the first edit, then again in the 2nd edit, and so on. A 100,000 word novel can easily necessitate the writer to compose 400,000 or more than words. Not everybody can make it; in fact, most of us can't.

For every 10,000 people who sit down down to compose a novel it is estimated that lone 800 win in finishing it. And of those 800, only 90 are eventually published. And how many of them go best-sellers? Maybe one or two. Maybe none.

So, the first hurdle the writer of the best merchandising novel have to defeat is to actually compose the book.

The 2nd ground more of us don't compose a fiction best marketer is that the book we eventually compose is simply the incorrect sort of book. Not every novel is destined to sell billions of transcripts and, sadly, literary virtue is often a deterrent to sales, rather than a help. Take a expression at the fiction best marketer listings for the past 20 years. Dan Brown, Jeffrey Archer, Cognizance Follett and Sir Leslie Stephen King have got all sold millions of transcripts but no 1 would ever impeach any of those cats of being literary geniuses. What they make and what they make well is state narratives and narratives are what you see piled up at the presence of bookshops. 'So-and-so-author is a great narrative teller' is another manner of saying that so-and-so tin barely compose his ain name, but never mind, he's great at creating plots.

Plots and not fancy bends of phrase or a superb ear for duologue are what really sells books.

And the 3rd thing the would-be best selling writer needs? Luck. Or rather, they necessitate to do their ain luck. How often make successful authors, publishing houses and agents hear the words, 'He was lucky, he establish a publishing house just like that and I've been submitting my ms for old age without success'? Let me state you: they hear it all the time.

I ran a book publication company up until three old age ago. On the top of the presence page of the The Do-Not Press website it now states (in large bold letters): 'We are currently NOT looking for entries from writers (so delight bash NOT direct us anything - it will not be read)'. And yet even now 5-10 ms somehow land on my weakling in the norm week. Are it because their writers are so very luckless that their entries end up, unread, in my recycling bin? I believe not. And by the same token, is the writer who passes a couple of years researching his marketplace before sending anything out the luckiest cat alive? Obviously not.

Remember, just about everybody have it within them to compose a best merchandising work of fiction. All they necessitate is person to state them how to make it.

Why Do You Write What You Write?

As one of the 220,000 Online Article Writers, I often chew over the question, why make I write. As the top Online Article Writer with some 12,000 online articles, I am often asked why make I write, thus perhaps it is clip that I reply this question. No 1 can reply it for me although they will try, but you would necessitate Dale Carnegie Mellon's artificial intelligence computing machine hooked to a supercomputer to travel through 12,000 articles to calculate out such as a broad assortment of possible answers. And is that even really feasible.

So, why make I write, have got you ever asked yourself that question? Recently, person asked me why I make not give away this secret. "Why make you write?"

The reply is different for me than it is for the other 220,000 online article writers and I say each 1 might have got a flimsy difference of logical thinking or combinations of grounds as well. Here is my answer: To aftermath up humanity, bend them back on, do them think. If I made you believe I win. Winning is fun, so is changing the World, or so said the unreasonable man?

What should you do? What should you think? That of course of study is up to you, all because I made you blink! - Spear 2007.

One person psychoanalyzing my many articles to calculate out what make me click suggested that maybe, I do not cognize or maybe it's a career card. Maybe you just like the word "expert" next to your name.

Actually, I cringe at that word "EXPERT" and wishing the proprietor of the website I most often compose on would not utilize it. I pull with Albert Einstein and would rather inquiry the experts and professional parasites have got always bothered me in concern as an enterpriser I suppose. After all, what is an expert, other than yet another human label. The worst portion of expert, is that if you later go an expert you have got to modify your conception and critique, therefore the expression "Do not justice others until you walk a statute mile in their shoes" in fact is a very good regulation of thumb. I have got been challenging the experts all my life and lambasting the people using hocus-pocus to over complaint for inferior work, chilling to go one, I certainly make not desire that label.

He who commands the media, controls the heads of the people - or so person once said. There are many ways created worlds are putative and cemented in the heads of the world and yes there are those who specialise in fooling most of the people most of the time. Sometimes people compose to do a statement, start a tendency or undertaking themselves onto the world, sometimes they are Rebels with causes, sometimes they are merely opinionated authors on Fluoxetine and each author have their ain story. What's yours; Why make you write, what you write?

If your end is to utilize articles as a manner to drive traffic to your website or blogs, all you necessitate make is compose short articles of about 300-400 words and submit the article to the article directories. You will be able to clock up this amount of words in one article by authorship an introduction made of 4 sentences. Each paragraph demand only be about 3-4 sentences long and the conclusion, 2 sentences. Before you cognize it, you will have got sufficient words in your article to being your article authorship career.

The introduction, obviously presents the article. The first two sentences, can be very generic about the subject you are writing about. For illustration if you are promoting a weight loss pill you can begin off with "Today many people are experiencing success in loosing weight by using weight loss pill and repast replacements. There have got been a important addition in dietary addendums on the market". As you can see, in these two sentences I have got not written about anything specific. The adjacent sentence presents the product. "Although Weightloss Pill is a relatively new merchandise on the market, there have got been some very good success weight loss stories'. This is the first reference of the product. The concluding sentence here is a benefit of the merchandise but guarantee you are not trying to sell the product. You end should be to pre-sell only.

Next are the 3-4 paragraphs. Research your merchandise and happen 3 or 4 alone benefits or characteristics of the product. Each point makes a paragraph of it's own. Try to lucubrate on each point using 3 to 4 sentences, without giving too much away. One point could be "advanced testing". This could be turned into "The Weightloss Pill is the consequence of advanced dietary testing. Many people from assorted states are excited about these results, as there may finally be a merchandise that could help them to beat out the conflict of the bulge. Weightloss Pills are a good safe improver to a good diet and exercising program". Finally the conclusion. Try to bind these last few sentences in with the introduction. Go back to your ain introduction and see what you told your reader your article was about. As you can see here, I told you that I would demo you the rudiments of how to compose an article.

My decision could stop with "Now that I have got explained how easy it is to compose an article, it is critical for you to drill authorship regularly to better your authorship skills. By following these stairway and with practice, there is no ground why you should not be able to pump out alone articles within10-15 proceedings each article". But on a structural and subconscious mind level, they're all the same.

And I don't intend basic structure, like three enactment construction (of course of study narratives have got a beginning, center and end). And I don't intend secret plan points etc either (Plot Point 1 and 2, Center etc).

EXILE, ordinary world AND ordinary SELF

It is common to do expressed the Ordinary World. This is a benchmark of the physical journey. It is the start point against which the end point will be measured. The Hero will eventually go back to this (In Godhead of the Rings (2004), Frodo tax tax returns to the Shire) or move away from it (In Alien (1979), Ripley never again returns to that human race she knew, in which the Alien is not present).

It is also common to do expressed the Ordinary Self. This is a benchmark of the psychological journeying - the Transformation. Again, it is the psychological start point against which the end psychological state will be measured - the motion from the Ordinary Self to the New Self. For example, in Annie Hallway (1977), Annie moves from diffident and dependent in New House Of York to confident and independent in Los Angeles.

It is also common simply to push the Hero into a New World (Platoon (Academy Award Best Film, 1986); Dead Poets Society (Academy Award Campaigner Best Film, 1989)), where the difference between the Hero's Old and New Worlds and Old and New Selves are made expressed or referred to. Terminology such as as "Fish out of Water" and "Newbie" are usual.

The Hero embarks on the Journey and Transformation, not to derive a capacity, illumination, powerfulness or balance, but to recover it. It is not the attainment of a capacity that assists the Hero suppress his (or her) challenges but the reattainment of it. Book Proposal Structure

The book proposal is the most of import tool of the nonfictional prose writer, at least during the initial phases of book publication when the author is looking for a literary agent and publisher. But book proposal construction is never discussed in high school and college courses. So where makes one larn this of import skill?

The best topographic point to larn how to compose a book proposal is from a literary agent. The literary agent is the go-between between author and publisher, and agents cognize what getting editors at publication houses are looking for. They cognize from direct experience. And they cognize because knowing is their breadstuff and butter. If they didn't cognize they wouldn't sell anything. Everything I'm saying about the construction of the book proposal come ups from what I've learned over the old age from literary agents.

The figure 1 thing that these agents emphasis is that a book proposal necessitates to have got respective separate discreet sections. You can't just throw together a couple of pages describing your book and hope to sell anything these days. The book industry, largely concentrated in New House Of York City, have evolved a rather standard formatting for the book proposal, and knowing this formatting will assist any budding immature author acquire his or her ft in the door and land a book contract.

The first few pages, often called the Overview, are the most of import portion of the book proposal. If you cannot sell your thought in these gap paragraphs, if you cannot gaining control reader attention, then you should rethink your project. The Overview presents your book to the reader and summarizes what is best about it. One of the things that an Overview often incorporates is the book handle, a one-sentence drumhead used by gross sales representatives to sell the book to bookshop buyers. "The first book about the Civil War from the position of children," might be a book handle. Very often the book manage incorporates the phrase "the first book about --" or "the first book to --" which demoes possible purchasers that there's something unique, and hopefully intriguing, about your book.

The followers subdivisions should also look in the book proposal, roughly in this order: a selling section, describing how the publishing house can sell the book; a publicity section, explaining how you'll capture radiocommunication and television attention; a Competing Books section, explaining why your book is better than anything else written on the subject; an About the Writer section, highlighting your relevant certificate and publications; a List of Chapters, which mathematical functions like a tabular array of table of contents for your book; a Chapter-by-Chapter Summaries section, which fleshes out each chapter in a paragraph or two; and a few Sample Chapters, which will demo how your book will sound when completed.

If you follow this criterion format, your book proposal will be off to a good start and will affect literary agents and editors with your professionalism and thoroughness. But if you can't compose a proposal, they'll never believe you can compose the book.

How to Make Money With Your Book

Writing, publishing and marketing a book can be a tremendous investment of time and money--so much so that many aspiring authors won't embark on the journey until it's clear they will get something (preferably dollars) out of it. Trouble is, they don't know how to make money with a book beyond the traditional model of "sell book, get paid a royalty". Royalties can be slim pickings, sometimes just 7 percent of the book's retail price. If you're looking to make more you'll have to think of your book as not just a book--you'll have to have a bigger picture in mind.

Does Your Topic Have Moneymaking Potential?

Be honest. Do others want what you have to offer? If your book is a memoir, for instance, with stories that only your family members can truly appreciate, there won't be a big market for it. However if your memoir is a harrowing tale of recovery, that's different. Others would want to read it and connect it to their own experience in one way or another.
You'll want to think the same way about your fiction or non-fiction book. What's selling in the stores right now? Can you make such a connection? Can your book tie into a current wave of popularity (Chick lit.? Business leadership? Current events?) Or is your book different, but so totally out of the box that you can grab some attention for it? The clearer you can be with nailing down a market for your book, the easier your job will be.

Sell It In Bulk

Why sell one book at a time when you can just as easily sell 25, 50, 100 or more all at once? Think about getting a company or a group to make a volume purchase. Support groups might want all their members to have your recovery memoir; churches might be interested in passing on inspirational works to their congregations; businesses certainly are in need of free gifts for their customers. Do a little research and find out what possibilities exist for your book.

Use Your Book in Your Business

If you're an entrepreneur, a book can be an excellent lead generator. It's a way to reach customers who may not have found you through your usual marketing strategies. You'll see this technique at work in books such as "Secrets of the Millionaire Mind" and "No B.S. Time Management for Entrepreneurs". These books offer invitations to free seminars, coupons for free gifts, contests, free trial subscriptions to newsletters. The authors of these books understand that while they'll make a little money from selling the book, the real funds will flow from turning the customer into a purchaser of their higher end products.

Use Your Book to Pursue Job Opportunities

If you're not an entrepreneur, you can still earn financial benefits from your book in non-direct ways. Think of it like this: your book becomes your business. You use it to attract speaking engagements, teaching gigs, or even consulting work. You could develop a workshop around your book. Many of the teachers in continuing education programs such as those offered through The Learning Annex (www.learningannex.com) are authors who have done just that. If you're in the corporate world, think of this: few people get to walk around with the word "author" on their resume, so it's sure to stand out when you're hunting for your next job. In fact, it may bring you better offers!

Prepare Your Plan of Action

If you've been putting off starting your book because you're not sure if there's money in it, then do your research. Take a few of these ideas, or use them to think up new possibilities, and map out how you could make money with your book. If the numbers look good, print them up, post them near your computer screen and let the vision of those potential dollars inspire you to your book's conclusion.

Hero's Journey, Monomyth (188 Stages of) - Old World and New Self

FORWARD

The 188 stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) is the template upon which the vast majority of successful stories and Hollywood blockbusters are based upon. In fact, ALL of the hundreds of Hollywood movies we have deconstructed (see URL below) are based on this 188+ stage template.

Understanding this template is a priority for story or screenwriters. This is the template you must master if you are to succeed in the craft.

[The terminology is most often metaphoric and applies to all successful stories and screenplays, from The Godfather (1972) to Brokeback Mountain (2006) to Annie Hall (1977) to Lord of the Rings (2003) to Drugstore Cowboy (1989) to Thelma and Louise (1991) to Apocaplyse Now (1979)].

THERE IS ONLY ONE STORY

THE 188 STAGE HERO'S JOURNEY:

a) Attempts to tap into unconscious expectations the audience has regarding what a story is and how it should be told.

b) Gives the writer more structural elements than simply three or four acts, plot points, mid point and so on.

c) Gives you a tangible process for building and releasing dissonance (establishing and achieving catharses, of which there are usually four).

d) Tells you what to write. For example, at a certain stage of the story, the focus should be on the Call to Adventure and the micro elements within.

ABRIDGED TIPS, EXCERPTS AND EXAMPLES:

(simply go to http://www.heros-journey.info/ for full details)

*****Fear of the Return to the Ordinary World*****

The Hero - willing and unwilling - often lives in fear of the return to the Ordinary World and the Ordinary Self. In Star Wars (1977), Luke never wants to go back to Tattooine. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Bonnie wakes up afraid that Clyde is not there. Even seemingly unwilling Heroes do not return to the same place - the Journey has given them a new capacity and transformed them into a New Self. In The Shawshank Redemption (1994), Andy does not return home but goes to Mexico.

*****Leaving behind a tangible of the Old Self*****

With a goodbye of the Old Self, we see the Hero leave behind a tangible part of his old self. In Brokeback Mountain (2005), Valerie sees Ennis in the café. She leaves.

Hero's Journey, Monomyth (188 Stages) Screenplays for Films

*****Devolved State*****

This is a total expression of the Hero's Ordinary World and Ordinary Self. It is a benchmark. In Tsotsi (2005), Tsotsi is part of a criminal gang, which is something he will leave behind by the end of the story. In Get Carter (1971- the superior version with Michael Caine), we discover in the first scene that Jack Carter's Outer Challenge is to discover who killed his brother, his Inner Challenge is to escape from his criminal associates / past and his Romantic Challenge is to wrestle Britt Ekland away from the mob boss.

*****First Trial Inner Cave - No Going Back*****

A number of things happen in the Inner Cave of the First Trial. One element is the No Going Back. In Bonnie and Clyde (1967), Blanche wants out but Buck (and therefore she) can't get out because he has killed a man.

188+ stage Hero's Journey (Monomyth) and Transformation - Conscious Agreement

*****Middle Cave Trial*****

The Middle Cave, whichever it is (First Threshold, Road of Trials or beyond) is where the Hero confronts Allies and Enemies. A Trial is not unusual. In Straw Dogs (1971), David finds it hard to work, drives to town and is nearly involved in a car accident, which he skillfully avoids.

*****Conscious Agreement*****

The Hero consciously agrees to Journey and Transform, post the Unbearable Antagonism. Methods include:

Explicit Statement. An Explicit Statement or Declaration of Intent is heard. In The Matrix (1999), Neo has a choice between the blue and red pill. In Star Wars (1977), Luke explicitly states that he wants to join Obi Wan and become a Jedi Knight like his father.

Implicit Statement. Even if the Hero is unwilling, the Explicit Statement may be implicit in the Hero's action. In Gladiator (2000), Maximus' family has been brutally murdered. He will seek revenge.

Affinity Fraud - I Trusted You and You Screwed Me

In March, 2007 Dateline NBC aired a story called "To Catch an Identity Thief" in which a man was fooled into going into business with a woman who promised he would make a lot of money if he would re-ship goods sent to his home to overseas recipients. The man, Jeff Ball, fell in love with this woman, Wendy, who earned his trust and then defrauded him well over $40,000 in shipping expenses on these packages. The fact that she gained his trust only to turn around and screw him over describes a fraud called affinity fraud.

Affinity fraud is a scheme in which your trust in another person is used against you. This is a type of moral crime that can take a financial and emotional toll on the victims. The person running this type of scheme targets people by gaining their trust and infiltrating their ranks. These groups are often churchgoers, senior citizens, cultural minorities, and low income individuals.

A person engaged in affinity fraud will often become a member of a group in some official looking manner. Doing so puts people at ease with the newcomer and a certain degree of trust is given. These con artists do this regularly and are adept at earning other people's trust.

Friendships or relationships are established for financial gain

A person engaged in an affinity fraud scheme will automatically earn some trust among their fellow members. They work quickly to earn more trust by associating themselves with the leaders of the group so that they can utilize that relationship to earn trust among the group's members. This type of fraud can take some time to establish but the rewards can be big for the person committing this scam.

Victims of affinity fraud are very embarrassed

Affinity fraud scams are difficult to note and stop because the victims are in a state of denial or too embarrassed to report the crime to local authorities. Victims feel there is nothing that can be done because the money or property was freely given to the culprits. At the very minimum, report the crime to authorities so that the perpetrators can be stopped and nobody else will become a victim. Otherwise the crooks will seek to victimize other unsuspecting people.

There are lots of consumer fraud schemes out there. It is up to you, the consumer, to educate yourself to recognize what is and is not legitimate. Hopefully our advice will help you minimize becoming a victim of the crime of theft by deception.

*****Gap between the Old and New World*****

A critical aspect of the Hero's Journey (Monomyth) is the gap between the Old and New Worlds. This manifests itself most often on the Road of Trials, when the Hero is part way from the Old and New Self. In Kramer vs. Kramer (1979), Billy goes to bed early because he misses Mom, even though Ted is well on his way to being his new Mom.

Just Write

Have you ever questioned why you write? Have you ever written a piece that seemed to be five hundred words of nothing? Or had your conclusion written out but lacked an intro or middle? I too get ahead of myself sometimes. I'm so eager to be done with whole writing process that I'm already thinking of the most eloquent way to say "the end".

You get to a point where you really don't want to draft, edit, proofread or do any of the other things to that go with writing. Perhaps you'll go and put a load in the laundry.

Laundry! When did chores become more satisfying than producing a written piece to share with like-minded people, or to illustrate a different perspective? If you put too much pressure on yourself then anything seems more important than writing. And you'll be finding any excuse to escape and procrastinate.

It's not that you are procrastinating from the actual task. You like writing. You like expressing yourself and possibly getting a little praise in the process. It's the stress that you are procrastinating against.

The pen chewing, fingers drumming, backspace pushing, stress. You know that lurking around your worksite are all those devilish obstacles such as writers block, brain fogs, your computer crashing right when you are in the middle of the most glorious sentence you ever wrote. Your hands will cramp up, or worse you'll just sit there staring at the nothingness which is your writing career-why must you suffer so-

There's really no need to be so dramatic or get an anxiety attack when you have to write. You know that the second you get started you won't be able to stop and that a hand cramp was never a good enough reason to stop writing and you love those, Ah ha moments that follow after a good healthy brain fog. And let's face it, has there ever been a better excuse to make the kids clean up then "I'm in the zone, if I stop now I may never write again!"

Yes, we have to take a few blows for our "art", moments when we just aren't as creative as we'd like to be. Or times when we would rather not jot down another phrase again, but it isn't possible. Whether you use articles to promote a business, write literature for children or poetry for social movements, you know that you can not go a long period of time without communicating yourself with one of life's most difficult tools-words. Try as you might the laundry just doesn't have that same spark of excitement as writing.

Don't write to change the world. Don't write to make a point. Don't write to make money. Just write. Write because you want to, because it excites you, because you like doing it. All the glory comes later and it forms itself as you go along. Just write, and then sit back and watch it happen. Ask yourself seriously, if you never became a best selling author, or even published could you really stop. You can procrastinate all you want be inevitably you'll be creeping back to your worksite to rekindle your relationship with your writing. Don't get discouraged and don't put so much pressure on yourself. Just write, whatever it is you want to say.

Publishing or Self - Publishing

It will probably come as no surprise to you that these days it is very hard to publish a book. For those of you, new authors, who haven't learned the reasons for this, consider the following facts

• Under incessant attack from TV, film, CD, video, and of course the Internet, the market for serious printed books has shrunk a good deal from what it was in prior decades. While all of these, especially the last, may not seem like direct competitors in kind, they are all direct competitors for the potential reader's time.

• One might be tempted to place significant blame on the declining quality of education as well. Insofar as this is true, it also operates synergistically with a decline in the quality of popular culture, particularly of the young who would otherwise be consumers of future literature.

• As a result, conventional print book publishers have had to concern themselves more and more with the bottom line, tending away from the effort and concern they previously expended in consciously supporting the quality of literary output. They no longer can maintain armies of in-house editors whose job it is to screen manuscripts sent to the publishing house by authors. The recognized freelance literary agent is now typically used to pre-screen such manuscripts.

• For newly written fiction, well over 95% of manuscripts by unknown / first time authors are rejected by agents. Of those manuscripts which are accepted by agents, over 95% are rejected by conventional publishing houses, believing they represent a serious risk to their bottom line. There is thus currently almost no market in conventional book publishing for fiction by new authors in the U.S.

• Authors of authoritative or otherwise interesting non-fiction generally have an easier (but not always easy) time with conventional book publishing. This may be particularly true of scholarly works written by recognized experts (of course, new fiction by well-known authors in general also gets an easy path to conventional publication.)

How can we authors publish a book in the face of this current unsatisfactory condition? Fortunately, there are three relatively recent developments in book publishing, book printing, book marketing and promotion that, if used wisely, can be used to overcome the publishing brick wall and get our books out to the public:

• Web-based publishing and similar state-of-the-art printing technology allows us to print relatively few high-quality books at a time at remarkably low cost. Though that cost is typically borne by the author, the process allows him to retain all rights to his literary creation — something that conventional book publishers never permit.

• Internet-published books, or e-books, are a very good way for small manuscripts to be created with virtually no printing costs, since the e-book exists only in electronic form.

• The Internet is an excellent way for the author or his allies to promote and even to sell his book directly to the reading public. It is not usually recommended that it be the only way to promote your book, but it provides an excellent start.

This route to publish a book has a number of advantages for you, the author. You may not have even thought of some of them, or if you did, gave them much merit. Still, consider, if you will, some of these:

• Your publication plans do not have to depend on a publisher's opinion of your work, which is at least as likely to be based on his estimate of the likelihood of making money from it as of its literary worth.

• The fact that you do not have to wait for anyone's opinions or views, nor do you have to surrender any of your rights to the publication, can act as a powerful energizer to you while you actually carry out your planned publication.

• You can save a great deal of time to publish a book — typically the many months that it takes to find an agent; and if you finally do, for the agent to find a conventional book publisher.

Why I hate Michelle Malkin

My mom once told me that projecting the crimes of a few onto the shoulders of the many is very easy yet very wrong. When she said that to me, I was 14 had just been mugged and had my Walkman stolen. I had said some preposterous thing about blacks. I honestly don't even remember what it was

Even though this column is nearly three years old, it made me very angry. In it, Malkin describes the imbalance of covering Winona Ryder's shoplifting charge - a big story then - vs. not covering what she calls "the Wichita Massacre" - where 4 people were killed by two men.

Yes, the media has some messed up priorities. For instance, the Michael Jackson trial. What relevance does that have on anyone's life besides Mr. Jackson and the kid? Nobody's.

However, she gives a stupid reason why the Wichita murders should've been wall-to-wall coverage: the perps were black. She then says that had the four been people of color and the perps white, there would've been big coverage in the news. I think she's getting at the coverage of the killing of James Byrd, Jr. in 1998.

The difference, of course, is that Byrd's slaughter was racially motivated while the Wichita murders, as sad as they are, were not. The Wichita victims were merely in the wrong place at the wrong time. The killers didn't seek them out, the four just happened to be home when the perps broke in.

It's like comparing apples to Diet Coke.

That's why I don't like Malkin. Too often, she tries to take race to places it doesn't belong. Like the War on Terror. She's written an entire book about how Japanese internment during WWII was good and even proposes that it wouldn't be so bad if we did it with Arabs today.

There are black racists out there, to be sure. I've encountered a few in my life, having grown up in mostly black neighborhoods. It seems to me that it's mostly older people. Those are the only black people that have had a problem with me. Well, them and the fathers of a few girls I dated in high school :o). But there's not this plan to kill white people that she seems to imply.

I think the bigger threat in the coming years, however, will not be racism, but xenophobia. Unfortunately, I see this more and more, with the term "Mexican" becoming a general derogatory word describing anyone of Hispanic origin.
